From the landings on the Normandy coast, 6th June 1944, until the breakout and closure of the Falaise pocket in August, the battlefields of Normandy represent one of the largest open-air military museums in Europe.

Since the film, Saving Private Ryan, and more recently (2001) Band of Brothers, interest in the Normandy campaign has grown.
